Artist – Brian Gartside
Brian Gartside has been established on the NZ art scene for over 40 years, firstly as a Lecturer In Art and Ceramics in three Colleges of Education and later as a successful and respected potter and clay artist. His studio pottery is collected very widely throughout the country. His work can be found in most of the Art museum collections in New Zealand. He lives in rural Pukekohe and his ceramic work is noted for his strong colourful images. For the past thirty years he has published magazine articles, contributed to several international conferences and taught workshops in ceramics on a regular basis in Canada, USA, Britain and Australia. He has been a guest artist in Hungary, Finland, USA and Canada.
“I use modern, technical methods with assistance from commercially prepared clays, minerals and special coloured pigments in the creation of my decorative bowls. I work in themes and series with images that change and evolve from month to month and no two pots are the same.”
Some sculptural pieces are basically ceramic but often employ multiple kiln firings and mix medium surfaces and more complex methods. He has always had a strong interest in drawing and recently developed skills in digital, publishing and graphic art.
