Artist – Julia Middleton
Julia completed her Bacheolor of Applied Arts at Whitireia Polytechnic in Contemporary Jewellery Design in 2011. Since that time Julia has been invited to exhibit her works internationally in Holland, London and Australia as well as nationally in galleries in Auckland, Wellington, Dunedin, Invercargill and Riverton. In 2014 Julia was awarded by the Invercargill Licensing Trust in conjunction with Invercargill Art Gallery ‘2014 Southland Artist of the Year’. Most recently Julia was asked to exhibit at the Southland Museum and Art Gallery as part of the ‘Turangawaewae A Place to Stand’ Exhibition in 2017.
Julia works and teaches from her home ‘Studio Galena’ in Riverton and employs various techniques and experimentation with multiple materials including precious metals, non precious metals, woods, and found objects. She produces one off handcrafted pieces that are often reminiscent of industrial and architectural forms and represent a kind of ‘future past’. “I enjoy searching for textures, fonts and patterns on vintage objects, re-purposing these to then become the focus of the piece. I liken them to curiosities”.
