Artist – Katherine Buess
Southland artist Katherine Buess has an art studio based in Invercargill. She has been printmaking for many years and more recently experimenting with paper sculpture.
Graduating in 1992 from the Otago Polytechnic School of Art with a Diploma in Fine Arts (honours), her art practice includes woodcuts, mixed media, paper sculpture and jewellery. After two years of living in Vanuatu, recent work has a Melanesian flavour. Katherine is particularly interested in the use of leaves in the making of the salusalu (a neck garland worn to mark special occasions). Since returning to New Zealand she has been making paper assemblages, based on native and exotic leaf motifs’.
